Goals down this season

The NHL has seen goal scoring go down this past season compared to last. In 2006-07, 7082 goals were scored, last season saw 7443 goals scored, for a difference of 361. In 2006-07, the average per team for goals scored, was 236, in 05-06, it was 248.1.

Power play goals have also taken a drop, in 06-07, 2082 goals were scored, in 05-06, 2545, a difference of 463. The average per team in 06-07 was 69.4 in 05-06, it was 84.8.

In order to get goals,you have to shoot on goal. In 06-07, there were 72779 shots, for average of 2426 per team. In 05-06, 73751, for an average of 2458.

If goal production is down, naturally the goal per period will also take a hit. In 06-07, 1st period goals scored :2107/70 per team. 2nd period: 2465/82 3rd :2393/80 , goals in overtime : 117/4. In 05-06, 1st :2216/74 2nd : 2576/86 3rd:2514/84, OT: 136/4.53.

Hopefully this does not become a trend over the next few seasons.
